The Meyer May House
The Meyer May House located in Grand Rapids, Michigan, is a completely restored Frank Lloyd Wright-designed home. The home located in the Heritage Hill Historic district was built in 1908-09. The home is an excellent example of Wright’s Prairie school era. The well-informed Guides give a free comprehensive tour explaining the history and in-depth information of the house. The rooms are filled with original furniture designed by Frank Lloyd Wright for the home, as well as reproductions. The Meyer May House is the best example of high ceilings and ornate paneling of all the other preserved homes in the area. Great way to spend an hour and a half for home and architecture buffs. It is truly an unforgettable experience.
To enhance your experience, be sure to view the 30- minute video in the home next door before taking the tour. The video details the restoration process and gives the back story about the homeowners, Meyer May, a clothing business owner. The original belongings of the family were retained which turns this into a real museum exhibit. The Steelcase Corporation preserved and renovated the home recreating every-last detail. This is the only Frank Lloyd Wright home open to the public at no charge. There are other early 1900 era homes in the area to view for contrast in design. This is the Heritage Hill Historic District and is worth spending time driving around the neighborhood.
Be sure to check the limited schedule for days and times that the home is open Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday, 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. The tour takes an hour and a half. Picture taking is allowed. This is a must-see if you are in the area.
